Snow Day Savvy

It’s Day 6, but the sun is out and it’s above freezing for the first time in a week — so the end is in sight, Northwest Arkansas Mamas! Snowpocalypse2013 003_edit_resize

As this, the first of what will likely be several winter weather “events” this season, comes to an overdue end, I find myself already thinking about the next one. How will we prepare? What will we do differently? What was fun about this one that we have to be sure and add to the “Snow Day To Do List” again?

And that’s where you come in. You! You endlessly patient, brilliantly creative Moms who either endured these six days with me here in Northwest Arkansas or have experienced your own winter weather in your own corner of the world. I want to hear from you!

What did your kids love doing during these days off? How did you spend your time? It can be a craft, a food, a book, a movie, an indoor activity, a snow activity, a family tradition, something technology-driven — anything! Did you blog about it? Post the link and I’ll share it out. I’ve created a Pinterest board to capture everything, too.

What went wrong that you’ll fix for next time? Did you run out of a favorite snack? Underestimate the weather and make plans at the height of the madness? Those lessons might help someone, too.

Our Snow Day Favorites:
  1. Beef Stew. Our FAVORITE snow day meal. My recipe is here –> Crock-Pot Beef Stew Recipe.
  2. Our tradition of Family Photos in the Snow. Simple, simple, simple. We snap a pic during the first snowfall each year. It’s a thing, and I love looking back at the pictures as Colt gets older.
Lessons for Next Time:
  1. Stock the pantry with a few snow day “basics” so we don’t have to remember them in the mad dash to Walmart with the rest of the panickers. For gosh sakes, we got in from playing in the snow Friday to discover I had no hot cocoa! FAIL.
  2. Don’t assume the coat and gloves that were a little big on him the last few years will fit THIS YEAR. Have this revelation BEFORE it snows.

Ok, your turn. Go!

I fully intend to blog about the never-ending snow days again this evening, but for now, here’s my entry from last Friday: http://coussoule365.blogspot.com/2013/12/friday-feature-snow-days.html

Snow days do not necessarily equal no-learning days when you have the Meanest Mom in the World. :)

I thought, for sure, that taco soup would have been on this list. Stay warm and ALWAYS have plenty of marshmallows! (Oh, and blowing bubbles in sub zero temperatures is fun, they freeze, “painting” snow with food coloring is fun, and we are fans of roasting marshmallows in every kind of weather.)
