Last summer, Colt became enamored with a cucumber he bought at the Farmers’ Market and while he still doesn’t care to eat cucumbers, he’s quite interested in keeping an eye on them during our lap around the produce booths every Saturday morning.
A few weeks ago, I decided this might be a fun twist.
Grow your OWN cucumbers!
I immediately turned to my friend Tena for advice as I hadn’t the slightest idea what to actually do with a cucumber plant. She recommended a specific, fancy kind of dirt (soil?) and I remember something about hills. And though I value and respect her green thumb expertise, Jeff and I decided that the smallest bag of Miracle-Gro at Walmart would be juuuuuust fine in our attempt to humor the fleeting interests of our favorite three year old.
We went ahead and planted the lima bean sprout he brought home from school a few weeks ago, too. That can’t hurt, right?
So far, the plants are doing fine though they’d probably be a lot happier if I could convince Colt they aren’t always so “thirsty”. It will truly be a miracle if our little suburban garden ever produces an actual cucumber. Naturally, I’ll keep you posted.

I cannot tell you how much I hope that planting yields a cucumber. He will be so proud! Also, could he get any cuter? No, I don’t think so.
